Dreaming of azure waters, white beaches and sunshine thanks to Louis Vuitton

Labellecrush-Spirit of travel02

It’s no lie that whenever I’m back from a holiday I already start dreaming of and planning the next one. My desire to travel the world, meet new people and experience their cultures, food, fashion and way of life is well known amongst my friends and family. Perhaps this is why the Louis Vuitton Spirit of Travel Campaigns gets me all excited – “To travel is to live”.
This season the luxury house has migrated to the perfect cerulean waters of the West Indies, specifically St. Barths, shining the sunlit-spotlight on it’s lightweight luggage and new Twist bag, designed by Creative Director Nicolas Ghesquière for LV’s Spring collection. The mini video also highlights both the Alma and Epi bags in lickable sorbet colours – yum!

Wherever you are, feel the sand under your toes, squint your eyes as you look out to the ocean and feel the breeze through your locks – go on, escape for a few minutes!

If you’re not quite finished with your mini travel-break, then see one of my favourites and the most magnificent so far, shot last year on safari by photographer Peter Lindbergh and styled by Carine Roitfeld, in my home country of South Africa – enjoy!

D&G love the mamas!

The plus belle crush of all is the love I have for my kids and Dolce & Gabbana mirrored this mom/baby bond with their awesome Autumn Winter 2015 collection at Milan Fashion week!

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are known to show the whole famille with multiple generations in their campaigns but today’s collection, “Viva La Mamma”, was an ode to mamas everywhere. Not only did the designers show their wearable creations with scrawled slogans such as “Je t’aime maman” (I love you mom) but the show was a celebration of motherhood. Toddlers in matching gear to the moms, bambino’s perched on hips and perfectly posed children strutted alongside their gorgeous mothers.
The invitation featured children drawings and wobbly handwriting with messages like ‘ti amo mama‘ (I love you, mom). The kiddie’s writing and pictures reminding me that the Italian duo did create a spectacular wedding dress for the ultimate Hollywood mama, Angelina Jolie, that had her brood’s drawings embroidered on her gown.

Along with Dolce & Gabbana’s signature roses and lace details emblazoned on feminine dresses, models were accessorised with jewel and fur encrusted headphones (to keep out the baby noises perhaps?). The show’s signature tune was the Spice Girls’ 1996 hit “Mama” and Bianca Balti’s pregnant belly received an emotional applause from the audience.

It’s not often that the luxury fashion world allows the blurring of women with children (not surprising as they are pretty messy at times!) but Dolce and Gabbana have shown that it can be done with beauty and grace. Bravo!

De-Fendi-ng the Strelitzia

You may be forgiven if you don’t know what a Strelitzia is, however after Fendi’s show in Milan this week it seems that more of the fashion world will now know what I’m referring to.
Also know as the Crane flower or Bird of Paradise flower, this graphic-like long stemmed orange and purple bloom is indigenous to South Africa, yip, our very own piece of L’ Afrique du Sud had Karl Lagerfeld inspired! Who knew he was such a fan?!

I can’t say that growing up I was that much of a fan of this flower, my grandfather had a huge plant in his garden that continuously bloomed, but these plants seemed so ugly compared to the prettier petunias, roses and camellia flowers that sat alongside them and flowers still remind me of South African homes circa the 1980’s – along with aged brown patterned sofa’s and olive green carpets. But like everything, these bird-like flowers are having their resurgent moment and what better way than on on of the world’s most prestigious catwalk right? And now that I see it at Fendi I’ve changed my mind! Their long stems tucked into over-sized clutches, leaving the brightly coloured flower peeking out perfectly. Move over mini-dawgs and key chain adornments – the Strelitzia is where it’s at!

Nod to the bob

If the Oscar red carpet is anything to go by, then we should all be rushing out and getting our hair cropped into an awesome long-bob right this minute!
Forget about Scarlett’s short back and sides, I mean how many of us can really pull that off anyway, the haircut of the moment is chic, sophisticated and hot – and while you’re at it, make sure you’re styling it to the side! Check.it.out.

My ABC’s of NYFW

A/W 2015 #NewYorkfashionweek at a glance

It’s awesome that it’s still winter right?* I mean in the kind of way that as the new collections for the neeeeeeext cold season are steaming up the catwalks we can already calculate what we’re adding to our wardrobes now, or what hair, shoe and bag trends we’ll be keeping and which ones we’ll be ditching .

As I try (mediocrely) hard to start a capsule wardrobe for myself – um, let’s call this a “work in process” – I’m doing a mini shop in my mind for which items I’ll be buying to add to this slow-in-the-progess capsule wardrobe.

A/W 2015 fashion weeks are far from over (roll on the rest of London, on to Milan and finally my home city Paris) to finalise this mini-shop, but for now, here are a few things I’ve noticed from the New York catwalks to wet the wardrobe appetite, and a few street style favourites to give you inspiration right now…

* I talk about winter, even though as I write this I’m sitting in warm sunny South Africa having almost forgotten what cold feels like (follow me on IG @labellebcrush), I’ll be back in Paris in.the.cold soon!

THE BAGS – As a bag fiend, these accessories are always at the top of my lust-have list.
Slouchy to structured, black to printed, massive to miniature – here are my top five
(Top to bottom).
Alexander Wang, Altuzarra, Narciso Rodriguez, Rag & Bone and Michael Kors.

THE DETAILS – I love noticing the small details that you can add to your outfit that won’t end up costing too much, but can set you bang on ‘trend’ or just give your look a difference.

Sunglasses are a fashionistas favourite, they change a look and can be a quick update to the new season’s wardrobe, I love Phillip Lim’s retro style shades with the super dark lenses mixed with the dark red lip.
Street style aficionado, Alexander Wang’s mix of red and black tartan with buttons and studs is a must-have addition to the wardrobe (and we’re already half way there with the red and black tartan shirt seen in most of the stores).
The smaller accessories such as Donna Karan’s multi-ring earring and Marc by Marc Jacob’s belt-purse… need I really say more? They’ll be that statement piece that picks up any dress-and-dash outfit.
Marc Jacobs also showed a bit of ankle on the catwalk as his models wore shorter pants, already a growing trend, but I especially love the sexier take with the modern fishnet stocking peeking through. And speaking of the fishnet, Proenza Schouler’s hosiery is awesome – who knew hosiery could be cool?
The last two details on my New York list are from Michael Kors – the extra long chunky knit sleeve that’s been turned over (doesn’t this remind you of wearing your boyfriend’s winter knit?) – and Narsciso Rodriguez’s twisty flash of yellow bangle – LOVE!

THE EYES – put the statement handbag on hold, let’s talk about eyes…

– Feeling a little schizophrenic and can’t decide on which colour to wear today? Give your lids a moitié/moitié look as created by Tom Pechaux for Altuzarra.
– The smokey eye is still a favourite – dark, sultry and sexier than ever for Diane von Furstenberg by Pat McGrath.
– The reverse cat-eye seen at Proenza Schouler by Diane Kendal will surely get some attention – might take some practice on getting it right but I love it!
– And Rodarte’s diamante stick-ons neatly underlining the eye also gets me trés excited, teamed with an almost bare eyelid, it’s the perfect partner to an evening out.

THE BROWS – As all make-up artists will tell you, the brows are super important and unfortunately for the busy gal, they tend to be the part of the face we leave to last. But as they frame the eyes drawing attention to them, it’s worth spending that little extra time to coif and shape them perfectly – after all aren’t they the reason for Cara Delevingne’s major success?

I’m finding some inspiration in these brow-do’s seen at Diane von Furstenberg, Hugo Boss, Michael Kors and Narcison Rodriguez.

THE HAIR – As a huge fan of the top knot (most mornings more for convenience than fashion) I’m thrilled to see an updated version at Marc Jacobs (top middle), a little more perched on the forehead and beautifully smoothed at the back. If this neat-at-the-back seems like too much work then the messier, lower knots on the ramps of Diane von Furstenberg and Vera Wang are the perfect alternative – middle parting or side parting, with a dash of gel/gloss/oil á la Donna Karen gives the front a little texture too. And last, but not least, I love the low slung ponytail – tight or loose, neat or messy as seen at Derek Lam, Hugo Boss and Michael Kors.
Easy, laid back styles for the busiest of stylistas.

ON THE STREET – street style outside the shows has become as important as who’s sitting gin the front row and what’s showing on the ramps. Bloggers, designers, buyers, editors and A-listers are in paparazzi demand and the pressure to look good is high. Here are some of my favourite looks from the *mean* streets of New York city. Enjoy and be inspired!
(Don’t forget to look out for next week’s #LondonFashionWeek update!). XO

Carven presents its Saint Sulpice bag in the cutest mini-movie

It may seem as if I’m obsessed with handbags, and that would be a loud YES!
But who isn’t with a whole new season of the beauties around? This cute video entitled “Can you hold my bag” directed by Mélinda Triana for Carven, landed in my inbox the other day and I’ve played it at least 13 times. Chic girls running around perfect Paris with Carven’s latest Saint Sulpice bags … I had you at handbag right?

Why go plain when you can print it?

How does one choose a new season handbag when they are all so drool-worthy? It’s a seriously tough job! What I love most about this summer’s collections are all the prints that are popping up. Forget about buying yourself a plain purse and splash out on a funky pattern – this way while you’re still waiting for summer to come around you can zing up the monochromatic outfit with a perfectly colourful and printed accessory.
Here are my favourites – plain seems to dull now right?

I love jozi

I love coming back to the city I grew up in. There are the obvious things, like spending time with family and friends and having the familiarity of everything I know, but what I enjoy most is discovering Johannesburg through a different lens from the one I had when I left. Everything changes so fast around this megalopolitan and it’s a very different place to the one I grew up in.

Two of the biggest things I’ve noticed is how the fashion and food scene has exploded. They’re a huge part of how the people of Jozi (the local term for Johannesburg) communicate and socialise. Not only have more international high street brands entered this emerging market in the last few years, such as Zara, Topshop, Cotton On, Countryroad and Witchery to name a few, but websites such as spree.co.za are pushing local designers more and more (check out Adam & Eve, Klûk CGDT, Ruff Tung – to name a few). I also popped into jewellery designer Kirsten Goss and handbag designer Missibaba‘s new store, showcasing gorgeous adornments (including Ms Goss’s new Diamond collection) and handmade Missibaba bags – it took a lot to hold myself back from buying the whole store!

On the food front, not only have more supermarkets opened since I was here but there’s a huge community of urban food markets, organic farmers markets and craft drinks that have sprung up. Which brings me to a mini-spotlight on a market I visited on saturday morning called The Sheds, 1 fox street.

Labellecrush-thesheds01

Labellecrush-thesheds09

Found in the original city centre of Johannesburg and opposite the magistrates court, these buildings were originally mining sheds which date back to the 1920’s with the main market space possibly being the oldest structure in the city – dating to before the AngloBoer war. It has a real grungy urban feel to it, reminding me a little of downtown manhattan, which makes it feel very authentic – and almost most of the original structure remains, including the words “highly explosive loading area” on the outside of the corrugated iron walls. More of the history comes with the name of the bar located there, the Good Luck Bar – which as legend goes, was the site where the first bar, the Ferreira’s Bar, was grated a liquor licence in 1893 and then for the Good luck bar in 1895. Rumour has it that Charles Glass himself peddled his famous Castle Lager there too.

Now you can browse through the space and enjoy a montage of food, craft beer, wine and champagne, organic juices (I tried and loved an orange mix of juices from Colour me Healthy) and a few local wares such as t-shirts and bags (I couldn’t resist buying a shopper made from a mielie meal bag and a top from The International Department of Squares!)

It’s a joy to visit Johannesburg and see so much creativity and imagination happening. Creative people who are designing spaces that bring people together. If you’re in the city or just visiting check out the website www.1fox.co.za.
