Locking your love this V-day

Happy Valentine’s day!

As a prelude to this global day of love, I took a stroll through the Instagram hashtag Lovelocks and I loved what I saw. While Paris is obviously famous for being The Origonal City de l’amour and the Pont de l’Archevêché and Pont des Arts are as notorious for being where lovers can place a padlock on the bridges as a symbol of, well, their eternal love – the key gets thrown into the river therefore bonding the couple forever. It was awesome to see where else all over the globe lovers are locking their affections – and so, here is a mini gallery of instagrammers who’ve #lovelocked the world over. I hope you find your special spot!

Wishing for the hippest arm candy

Labellecrush-hipanema03

You may have seen these gorgeous multi-coloured wrist adornments in the last few years when they’ve become awesomely popular, but do you know the story behind these colourful strings?

Created by two Parisian women, Jenny and Delphine, who were inspired after their travels in Brazil and as the story goes, these coloured ribbons are given out to visitors in the city of Salvador, Brazil as a symbol of luck. They are tied onto the left wrist by a third party – each one tied with three knots and each knot comes with a wish made by the wearer. Once they have aged and finally fall off it is believe that your wishes have come true.

The Hipanema duo used the idea of these multicoloured ribbons and devised a way for us to wear them as a fashion accessory – taking 200-year old tradition and making it trés boho chic. Each bracelet has a few strands of coloured ribbon, pearls, beading, shells and threads that join onto a chic magnetised clasp which make it super easy to wrap around ones wrist. Every one also has a ribbon with words “Lembrança do Senhor do Bonfim da Bahia“, translated as “Remembrance of the lord of Good End, savior of Bahia, or Souvenir from the God of Bahia.” The Church of Senhor do Bonfim da Bahia became the guardian of the city of Salvador, and provider of miracles and granter of wishes. Nowadays people flock to the city and the church in search of these ribbons that provide miraculous powers and fulfilment of wishes.

Lucky for us, we don’t have to travel too far to enjoy these colourful trinkets.
So,go on, make a wish!

Blogging, babies and boxes of memories : Nirit Sumeruk

Labellecrush-NiritAbbou09

Fashion blogger and full-time mom, Nirit Sumeruk can’t help preserving each memory and experience she has through her love of photographs. She talks about her life in Paris, recounts her first Michelin-starred restaurant experience and why she started her much-loved blog.

You can’t help but not like Nirit Sumeruk. When she opens the door to her apartment in a chic Parisian suburb her smile is warm and welcoming. I’m instantly attracted to her fun, un-intimidating and friendly personality and she has a way of immediately disarming you. Her energy is infectious and easy-going which probably has much to do with her very global upbringing.

Born to Argentinian parents and one of 4 children, she was brought up in Cape Town, South Africa. After her final year at university she moved to London to do a gap year, followed by a few years in Tel Aviv where she worked for MTV which is what eventually brought her to Paris for a four-day job – where serendipitously she met her French husband. After a long distance romance, Nirit moved to Paris in June 2006 and as they say, the rest is history.

Nirit offers me coffee and decides that she’ll have her own version of ‘tea’ – hot water, milk and honey – which she says is a recipe of her South African childhood nanny, just another example of how she’s easily adjusted and merged her experiences.

As we sit and start chatting I’m drawn to the apartment’s spectacular and unobstructed view of one of Paris’s most beautiful monuments, Les Invalides. Nirit says, “We love this suburb and it would be hard to live anywhere else, even thought we’d love to have more space”. To her own admission her life can feel a little chaotic and disorganised at times what with two small kids, (AND another one of the way), running a fashion blog and her busy social life she doesn’t have much time for the boredom of organisation and knows that in some way it will all get done.

After living for two years in Paris and completing an acting course at Cours Florent, Nirit started the much-loved fashion blog, Paris Popcorn. She explains, “I was inspired when I met so many fabulous people who mingled in the world of burlesque cabarets – the people, the costumes, their life! I felt that I had to document everything I saw and so started the blog in 2008. After that it just snowballed, I fell in love with the fashion scene in Paris, I started attending the fashion shows, met street photographers and more people in the industry and that’s how the blog has evolved.”

Nirit loves ‘documenting’ and her apartment is one large memory box full of souvenirs that she’s collected. When I ask where the love of preserving memories comes from she tells me, “My dad used to film so much, it was the 80’s and he had one of those big video cameras. Now I love taking photographs and capturing the moment, I guess because my dad did it too.” She continues explaining that she usually keeps holiday cards for one year and that she loves anything creative and appreciates that the sender has taken the time to be thoughtful and creative. However, she notes that she doesn’t function well with clutter and to make room for new memories she de-clutters some of the old ones, hence keeping them for only a year.

This is what has made Paris Popcorn successful, Nirit’s distingtive ability to preserve and narrate a memory, that, and her fun and enthusiastic voice is clear in her writting.

On role models
“I’d obviously say my mom, she had four kids, managed to earn a whole bunch of university degrees and even had time to open up her own real estate and tourism business. Most importantly, I’ve learnt to listen to her! I also admire my French mother-in-law for her aesthetics, she puts a lot of design thought into everything and makes everything she does beautiful, it’s important. I love different aspects from different friends and I love reading other bloggers to get inspiration on how they organise their lives and how they travel.”

On Balance
She laughs at this question and replies “I have a great reflexologist!” But continues, “For some reason whenever I cross Pont d’Iena after popping into WH Smith for english magazines, it always gives me a sense that I can do this. Perhaps it’s the sense of freedom that I experience when I see the Seine, pont d’Alexandre and beyond. Plus I have a fabulous husband and great friends.”

On living in Paris
“Well, now I’ve got used to eating french food. In the beginning I found it hard to find anything I liked on the menu – everything was so exotic. Before we got married, my husband once took me to a beautiful chateau with a tasting menu and all I was thinking was, how to I tell this man that I don’t eat 10 out of the 15 things. So I embarrassingly apologised and they brought out the chef, can you imagine that? The chef came out, he asked me what I do like and then he specially created 13 things that I could eat. That was the first and last time that we went to a michelin-starred restaurant!”

On balancing motherhood and marriage
“Once you have kids you have to wear many hats, the wifey hat, the drool-proof mommy hat, the your-own-person hat, and you have to wear them all properly – you learn as you go. Listen to your partner. Listening to your kids. I also have a hard copy A4 agenda book that stays in the house so I’m able to put our family’s schedule in it and I can see what’s happening in advance and be more organised.”

On her beauty routine:
I’m a big believer in drinking lots of water especially for my skin. I cleanse, tone and moisturise religiously and I use YSL touché éclat – it’s a staple in my make-up box and nothing compares.

On pregnancy and a third baby:
“I’m excited! Super excited – I might have to be less sentimental, maybe I won’t have any time this time round. This baby will have to fit into a family of five! Wow! A Family of five! It’ll have to get used to hand-me-downs. I’m better prepared and I’m not as anxious and I’m just looking forward to having another bébé

On her fashion essentials:
I Love my handbags and shoes like most girls. I’m not too fussy about the brands that I wear – I have the practical brands that I’d get from high street stores and then I have my “show-pieces” like Bulgari, Dior, Louis Vuitton which I plan to hold on to for many years. You have to have a nice handbag when you’re in the fashion industry!  I love accessories and have a box of all my favourites such as my moms vintage necklace and matching earrings.

Bloomin’ style

Floral-01

Floral-04

When I first arrived in Paris I went on an induction to the city, a day where you mix with other ‘newbies’ to the City of Love an gather practical information that will help to settle you. This induction was labelled “Bloom where you’re Planted” – a gorgeous concept for anyone starting a new life in a new place. New job, new house or neighbourhood or moving to a different country with a foreign language and culture, everyone has experienced being the new guy at some point. And so, with SS2015 collections hitting the stores soon, and the strong influence of florals in all colours and forms, I’m reminded that just being “planted” is one thing, but to “Bloom” is quite another.

From my experience, you have to ground yourself deeply into your new environment to be able to flourish and fully open yourself to the adventure. So where ever you are planted, here is some inspiration to get your floral on and bloom!

Miss Natalie Portman really is this pretty in real life…

Miss Dior’s newest ad campaign features Miss Portman as a runaway bride and she’s wearing the perfect strapless Dior couture gown embellished in delicate flowers… sigh, it’s the dress we all dream of and along with the sparkling blue waters of the French Riviera it looks like the perfect wedding. That is, until the bride kicks off her shoes, ditches the dress and hikes up a ladder into a helicopter and flies into the Parisian sunset with a super beau co-pilot! Watch the “It’s Miss, Actually” commercial and sob (like I did) when she dumps THE dress!

Oh, and did I mention that I get to see this super-star most mornings on school drop-off and she really IS that pretty!

You’ll never want to take them off!

Dear Doc, do I have to suck in my stomach in all day to have a flat tummy?

Labellecrush-Clarinsbook02

Every Monday morning I promise myself to lay off the baguette, drink more water, eat more raw veggies, use a cellulite cream religiously every day, oh and get to sleep earlier to help my ever darkening black eye bags. By Wednesday the boulangeries (every 20 meters or so) have cruelly lured me in, the cold weather has hampered my l’eau intake, the school run has messed with my cellulite cream and Mr Sandman keeps missing my apartment on early his rounds! However, this doesn’t stop me from enthusiatically starting each Monday with a “this week will be different” mantra.
Lucky for me, this week I have a little extra help as I’ve been paging through the funny and useful “Doctor, I want to be the fairest of them all” written by Olivier Courtin-Clarins. The book is super cute – I especially love the illustrations, by Soledad Bravi – has loads of useful tips that cover the whole body.

Dull skin? Tight skin? Red skin? Monsieur Courtin-Clarins has a solution to try for all of it. Which foods will help from the inside and what types of creams, exfoliators and treatments will aid from the outside. From flabby tummies, orange-peel cellulite, tired and dry feet, bingo wings for arms to under-eye baggage and pimples, the surgeon-turned-Clarins-CEO has a tip, answer and product for all our beauty questions and annoyances. All in the name of creating better versions of ourselves.

My favourite part of the book, which will be my every Monday morning’s Mantra from now on, is the paragraph on Adopting rituals the keep us young now…
(I’m hoping this means I never have to give up the baguette!)

Sitting FROW at Lan Yu Couture at Paris fashion week

Labellecrush-LanYu02

Last night I donned my FROW shoes and headed of to the Grand Palais with my gorgeous friend and model Ingrid Seynhaeve to watch Lan Yu‘s haute couture show. Lan Yu is one of China’s leading couture designers and her previous collections of dreamy wedding dresses make any girl want to get married… or in my case, married again!

In last night’s show however there were no white bridal gowns but a striking collection of bright red couture gowns that reflect her personal commitment to preserving and sharing her Chinese culture whilst catering to a contemporary western customer. Her particular passion for the fine art of suzhou (a special technique of the Chinese art of embroidery whose secrets have been passed down through three generations of family) is seen throughout the collection and each gown is a unique masterpiece combining lace, satin and feathers. She’s combined these textures with transparent layers that carefully show off this embroidery skill and even though I would have nowhere to wear one of these showpieces a girl can certainly dream of having one in her closet!

I also rubbed shoulders with a few well-known actresses who came to watch Lan Yu’s talent. Australian-born actress Natasha Andrews (who’s hair was done in the coolest off-centre high-knot) known for her role in Magic in the Moonlight, she lives in Paris and is also girlfriend to Pierre Niney from the Yves Saint Laurent 2014 movie. Actress Dolores Chaplin, grand-daughter of Charlie Chaplin and Lolita Chammah, who has recently been nominated for a César for her role in Gaby Baby Doll – best I be heading to the cinema now!
