Liberté d’expression – a sad day for Paris.

Freedom of speech. Liberté d’expression.

I have taken this for granted. In the aftermath of the shooting at Charlie Hebdo in the 11th arrondissement in Paris yesterday morning it has left every person I speak to in shock. The turn out in support last night at Place de la Republic was amazing and I’m very proud to call Paris my adopted home. As a South African I am sensitive to how the freedom of our fellow patriots can be taken away, we have a long, sad and well documented history that we have overcome where freedom of speech is respected and each person has a right to their opinion and to be heard.

‘The pen is mightier than the sword’ and as I write this blog I am able to have opinions and express myself freely – this can never be taken away from us or our children.
My thoughts are with the families of Charlie Hebdo – this could have happened in any media room I have worked in and to any journalist I know.
A sad day for freedom of speech and Paris.

These photos were taken last summer along Les Berges on the Seine, I love that anyone could pick up a piece of chalk, write or draw and that the small boys are helped and encouraged by the bigger guys. Vive La Liberté d’expression!

January’s SOS Beauty products

I’m literally covered from head to toe. Beanie, top, sweater, scarf, coat, gloves, socks… hardly an inch of my skin shows, but it’s thirsty for love, care and hydration. These are what I’m using at the moment to moisturise, hydrate, illuminate and prime my skin:

Shu uemura depsea water lavender mist:  This morning I woke up to My 4-year-old telling me how lovely I smell, all due to this product! With eight herbal aromas this fine mist leaves the skin feeling hydrated, plus it smells so lovely and fresh. I use it as a toner or just before going to bed – even makes your jimjams smell good!

Benefit speed brow: Colours and sets brows in less than 5 seconds. Really, it’s that quick!

Dermalogica daily microfoliant: I love this microfoliant, and have used it for years. It’s a powder, add water and you’ve got a gentle exfoliant that removes all the days make-up and city grime.
Estée Lauder enlighten even skin stone correcting cream: We’ve heard of BB, CC, DD creams – well this is the first EE cream. Admittedly I get very confused with all this alphabet talk but since this is the perfect time of year to brighten and correct the skin without the added sun exposure, and this moisturiser focuses on hyper-pigmentation and dark spots, it’s the perfect marriage.
Tom ford illuminating primer: One of my favourite products, apply after moisturiser and before foundation leaves the skin with luminous canvas and gives it just the brightening lift against pasty winter skin.
l’anza healing strength been plant silk serum: I’ve just started using this product but I feel I can already see the difference, I think my hair is finally rejoicing for the moisture and love and seems shinier already. Over time it’s meant to strengthen weak and brittle hair and fortify and reduce hair breakage – let’s hope so and that I’ll have long flowing healthier locks in no time.

Following in the footsteps of last season’s twosome team-up of Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne, Burberry features another Brit model duo. This time, for spring/summer 2015, it’s timeless supermodel Naomi Campbell with Jourdan Dunn and the images are spectacular! Lensed, as always, by Mario Testino and creative directed by the talented Christopher Bailey.

Jourdan Dunn spoke to Vogue saying, “Burberry is such an iconic brand and I feel very proud to be a part of their campaign and their team,” Dunn told us this morning. “This campaign is even more special for me because I was shot with Naomi Campbell for the first time – someone who I admire and respect within the fashion industry.”

I love the mix of new and experienced that Burberry is harnessing, Isn’t it great to have amazing women to look up to? Ageless beauty wins again!

Crocking it in Thailand

I didn’t take much convincing for me to try almost every bag in this chaotic little store, The Bangkok Bootery, in Bangtao Beach in Phuket, lucky for me i’m not intimidated by giant crocodiles with fierce teeth! Almost every inch of the floor was covered in shoe boxes with shoes on top, the wall shelves filled with clutch handbags, hangers with croc skin and Python skin jackets and loads of crocodile skins – head and all – hung upside down on the ceiling.

Farming crocodiles is a pretty big thing in Thailand, in fact according one story in the Bangkok Post, “Thailand has the largest crocodile farming industry in the world and famous international fashion brands source their exotic skins from the kingdom”. The manager of The Bangkok Bootery store told me that they buy the skins from registered farms and then you can have anything made on site. Any shape and in pretty much any colour! A fashionistas dream right there!

All that glitters is a stick-on tattoo

Labellecrush-Temptattoos03

Trust Queen Bey to seal a trend and have everyone rushing to get in there right? This tattoo-as-jewellery trend really started last summer with a few celebs trying it out, but no-one quite does it like Beyonce. She was photographed in the metallic gold and silver body art while celebrating her birthday on a yacht in the south of France. Necklaces, belly chains and bracelets adorned the stars super-sexy body.

Labellecrush-Temptattoos01

Perhaps it was the house of Dior that inspired this trend when jewelry designer Camille Miceli designed a limited-edition set of temporary tattoo earrings, bracelets and cuffs made from, wait for it, 24-carat gold in 2012 (these would probably stop me from bathing for days!). The cheaper and non-gold versions became available and the trend doesn’t seem to be going anywhere fast. Models at the Dries van Noten S/S15 show at Paris Fashion Week waltzed the catwalk with painted-on gold lip rings – a similar effect to the metallic tattoo and a trend we can more than afford. I love that they shine and glimmer just like jewellery and are perfect for poolside summer days when you want to accessorise but need to feel fancy-free for a splash in the water.

Some celebs such as Sarah Jessica Parker have proven that they’re not just a bikini-and-beach kind of trend and have donned them on the red carpet too, so I decided to try them out for New Year’s eve. It took 30 seconds to apply, a simple dress, some slip on sandals et Voila! The perfect NYE outfit for a hot island holiday. And if like me, you’re not one to commit to a real inking they rub off in 2 to 3 days, giving you the flexibility to get as subtle or as adventurous as you want!
Try it, they’re huge and not going anywhere soon.

The magical sandal with the gold winged buckle

Labellecrush-AncientGreekSandals03

Labellecrush-AncientGreekSandals02

In search of the perfect summer sandal, I first saw Ancient Greek Sandals in a store in Johannesburg years ago. I was struck by the cute wings on the side, the detailed buckle in the shape of wings and the unique and sexy designs. I saw some again last year holidaying in Crete and then a few months ago in the Parisian go-to concept store, Colette on Rue St Honore. Little did I know the these global shoes, praised by the New York Times, Vogue, Elle and the Financial Times, have a history born out of, you guessed it, ancient Greece. I am a huge fan and not the only one, as the sandals have been seen on the pedicured paws of Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna, Rihanna, SJP and many others.

I don’t remember much about the stories of Ancient Greece. I’m certain I was supposed to have learnt them as part of my 4th Grade curriculum but (and perhaps sadly) what I know about these ancient gods and Goddesses is from a more modern pop culture to which it seems they have had a profound influence; the House of Hermes, the movie Poseidon, Pandora jewellery, Olympus cameras, Ajax household cleaner, Amazon.com and of course we’re aware of the Goddess Nike for obvious reasons.

The brand story of Ancient Greek Sandals (AGS) also uses myth from Greek history and starts like this, “According to an Ancient Greek myth, the gods and goddesses had their sandals made on the beautiful island of Crete by a gifted sandal maker who enriched each pair with magical powers. Famous for having made the flying sandals for Hermes, the sandal maker also embellished them with his personal signature… a “golden wing” buckle.”

The founders and creators of the shoe brand are talented duo, Christina Martini and Nikolas Minoglou, who both have a strong affiliation with Greece. Christina previously worked as a shoe designer for Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton and Iris srl, but after giving birth to her first child she moved with her family to the Island of Corfu in Greece. Nikolas was born in London, raised in Greece and after graduating in the US he moved back to Athens to take the reigns of his family’s well established footwear brand. With their perfectly matched skills, their love of Ancient Greece and their shared heritage they created this much-loved collection inspired by ancient Greek Gods and myths, pottery, jewellery and sculpture.

The shoes are designed with femininity in mind, I love the details as well as their unique designs influenced by ancient practice with a modern twist. They are handmade out of chemical -free tan leather in Greece by skilled craftsmen using traditional techniques.

Available in 180 stores and in 40 different countries, there are a many styles and colours, the choice is endless, from the simplest slip-ons to intricate ones that even Lady gaga would slip into – finally my summer sandal search is over!

The wait continues for a revamped Samaritaine store

Labellecrush-Lasamaritaine03

The first few times I visited Paris was with my mom. She knows the city very well and would take us to all the tourist places as well as one of her favourites, La Samaritaine department store. The landmark art deco building owned by LVMH sits on Rue de Rivoli and overlooks the river Seine. In 2005 the buildings doors were shut as it no longer met to meet safety standards and after lengthy renovations was meant to reopen in 2013. I pass this building often and always admire it’s beautiful architecture – especially the art deco signage in black and gold, I imagine the generations of women passing through it’s doors since it’s opening in 1869 and I’ve been exciting at the prospect it’s new chapter and story… it’s just taking a mighty long time!
The renovation is fully funded by LVMH boss Bernard Arnaud (France’s wealthiest man), his plan is to transform the space into luxury complex comprising of upmarket stores, a luxe hotel, office space as well as duty-free stores appealing to the Chinese consumer visiting Paris. However this week, more bureaucracy has put a halt to the 470-million Euro makeover. In May last year two Parisian associations (The Society for the Protection of Landscape and Aesthetics of France(SPPEF) and SOS Paris) went to court claiming that the facade proposed by Japanese architects Sanaa didn’t fit the aesthetics of surrounding buildings. The court’s final ruling this week is in favour of revoking the permit to renovate a portion of the 145-year-old building.
So now we wait a little longer, as La Samaritaine will appeal to the Council of State which is France’s highest administrative court, to walk though the doors of this historic Grande Dame. Sigh…

Ditching the guilt for a Happy Twenty Fifteen

While we’re easing our way into a new year and thinking of what 2015 may bring,  I’ve decided to concentrate on a resolution that I started over 10 years ago that became a passion and turned into a deep lifetime love – the practice of yoga.

With two young kids and a busy life it’s not always easy to fit in ‘me time’ and I seem to always find something else that ‘needs’  to be done and so I sacrifice yoga to do these other ‘important’ things.
I want to feel rooted, grounded and balanced, to grow from that solid grounding and be able to follow dreams and ambitions without fear – to surrender to each moment and jump with arms wide open grabbing every opportunity. If you have never done a yoga class I encourage you to try one, it could be the beginning of an awesome love affaire. Or if you too have skipped a few practices while trying to juggle everything else along the way, I hope you find the time to make space for yourself and while you’re at it – DITCH THE GUILT. As women and mamas it seems we spend a ridiculous amount of time worrying about what might not happen and wondering if we’re ‘doing the right thing‘. It serves no purpose but to unsettle the mind, cast doubt and shake your confidence.

So, stay in the moment, do what you love and have a very happy new year.

Wearing: Pants – American Apparel. Top – Zara. Sunglasses – Italia Independent. Rings – Marc by Marc Jacobs and H&M. Bangle – Cartier.

Love, Style and Bad Habits …

Labellecrush-Howtobeparisian03 Labellecrush-Howtobeparisian02 Labellecrush-Howtobeparisian07 Labellecrush-Howtobeparisian06 Labellecrush-Howtobeparisian05

Parisian women have always seemed mysterious. The subtle pout, the nonchalant way they carry themselves and their confident low-key look that oozes femininity. Think Brigitte Bardot, Audrey Tautou, Marion Cotillard or Vanessa Paradis – sexy, stylish, alluring and seemingly mysterious and untouchable… until now. How to be Parisian Wherever You Are : Love, Style and Bad Habits is an insightful tongue and cheek manual written by four friends and Paris natives, Anne Berest, Audrey Diwan, Caroline de Maigret and Sophie Mas.

I’ve just finished the book in Thailand (great for the holiday attention span!) and it’s the perfect handbook on how the modern Parisian woman manages to stay so mysterious that can be practiced wherever you are in the world.
It’s penned as if you’ve just made friends with a bossy, opinionated Parisian and she’s dishing her intimate secrets, obviously with immaculate red lips while sipping a glass of red wine with a cigarette in hand! She’ll share her fashion tips, teach you how to make your boyfriend jealous and enlighten you on the etiquette for beauty products and plastic surgery. She’s the Paris Bestie you’ve always wanted and you can use her insider knowledge without ever setting foot in the city of lights.

Here are some of my favourite bits in the haute handbook:

Being Naked – “You’re not a slave to the cult of the perfect body – so learn to make the most of what nature gave you.”
“If you don’t like your ass, walk sideways, your back to the wall, and show off your breasts. If your legs are too short or your thighs too wide, go on your tiptoes. If you don’t like your breasts…do something about them, but in the meantime, cross your arms, and when in bed, opt for positions lying on your back.”
Being the best version of yourself – “Enjoy the face you have today. It’s the one you wish you have ten years from now.”
When you can have anything – She doesn’t have a ring on each finger, or a big diamond on each ring. She doesn’t wear a golf watch that costs as much as a fancy car. In fact, she doesn’t own a fancy car. She doesn’t carry an enormous designer bag. But she might have a newspaper under her arm. She might mention Sartre or Foucault in a conversation, It’s her personality the sparkles and nothing else: the signs of intellectual wealth.”
Saving your skin – “In Paris , the rules are clear: you anticipate, you prepare for the future, but you never totally correct.”
On hair – “As your face gets messier with age, your hair can get neater, for balance.”
On attitude – “Always be fuckable: when standing in line at the bakery on a Sunday morning, buying champagne in the middle of the night, or even picking the kids up from school. You never know.”

And the bit that made me giggle the most is her list of essentials – jeans, the bag, the little black blazer, the white shirt and my best – a small silk scarf, “It has more than one function. First it adds a touch of colour to a dark outfit without running the risk of a fashion faux pas. Then, when it rains, you wear it over your head like Romy Schneider. And on occasion, you can even use it to wipe your child’s nose when you’ve run out of tissues.” – Whew! So pleased to know that I’m a little closer to be Parisian!

Stuck on finding the perfect present?

You may have left it a little late to make a gift purchase before the 25th, however this website is awesome for the perfect present. Notonthehighstreet.com is a UK based site that specialises in unique gifts that you won’t necessarily find at any of your local favourite stores.
Founded by entrepreneurs Sophie Cornish and Holly Tucker. Since 2006, these two women have hunted down the most original items from the best creative small businesses, brought them together in one place and made it super easy to buy them.
They started with around 100 small business, many of whom were also just starting out and creating products from their kitchen tables at night, now the duo offer thousands of options and keep adding more every week, making them one of the UK’s fastest-growing e-commerce businesses. If you’re looking for ingenious, fanciful or quirky gifts for that person that has everything then this site is your go-to-place.

My favourite souvenir that I’ve bought so far was a personalised story book for a friend’s newborn baby – it’s the story of a little boy/girl who goes in search for his/her name and is beautifully illustrated and written. “The little boy/girl who lost his/her name” by lost my.name.

Labellecrush-NOTHS08

This site does come with a warning though… you will start to spend a ridiculous amount of time thinking of who else you can buy gifts for, from Grandma who loves gardening to your fashionista friend! Happy buying.
